Walt Disney World Resort Has Announced a New Disney Resort to Open in 2012
Walt Disney World is about to begin building its first new hotel in seven years, a 2,000-room resort that will open in 2012.
Disney's Art of Animation Resort will feature 1,120 suites with room for as many as six people each and another 864 traditional hotel rooms, with a design theme based on four of the company's most popular animated movies.
The complex will be priced as a "value" hotel, at the low end of Disney World's scale, similar to Disney's Pop Century and All-Star Resorts, where standard rates begin at $82 a night.
The announcement is one of the strongest signals yet from Disney that it thinks a sustained recovery is under way from the long travel slump brought on by the global recession. Disney executives, who have been weighing construction of a family-suites hotel for several years, finally approved the project in January.
But in deciding to add another lower-priced hotel, Disney also appears to be betting that travelers will continue the frugal spending habits many adopted during the downturn. Disney has been relying on discounts to sustain attendance during the past year, and executives acknowledged Tuesday that consumers are still searching for deals even as Disney attempts to return to pre-recession prices.
"Quite honestly, we're in a bit of waiting for each other to blink," Walt Disney Co. Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo told analysts during a conference call to discuss the company's second-quarter earnings.
The Art of Animation Resort will be built on a 65-acre plot across a lake from Disney's Pop Century Resort. The location will allow Disney to use a pair of long-neglected, unfinished buildings that Disney originally constructed as a second phase of Pop Century but which it abandoned amid the 2001 recession. Pop Century's first phase was completed in 2003.
Plans for the new resort show 10 wings of rooms and a separate
building housing the check-in lobby and restaurants. The hotel wings will be separated into four distinct groups, each with a theme from a different animated movie: The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Cars.
Each section will have separate courtyards anchored by icons from the movies - such as a 35-foot-tall King Triton presiding over the Mermaid section - and the entire resort will use bright-color palettes evocative of the lush scenery of animated movies. Hotel designers say they have been soliciting input from artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios on everything from building elevations to which scenes to depict at the swimming pools.
"The hope is you walk into this courtyard and you're kind of like
seeing it as a character in the movie," said Frank Paris, a senior project manager with Walt Disney Imagineering, the company's in-house attraction-design unit.
Because the majority of its rooms will be six-person suites, the Art of Animation Resort will have roughly the same capacity as Pop Century, which has 2,800 conventional rooms.
With the project, Disney is placing an aggressive bet on what it says is a growing market for affordable suites aimed at families traveling with several children or extended families. Disney World has been testing the concept with about 215 suites at its All-Star Music hotel that were converted out of about 430 ordinary rooms about three years ago.
Jim Durham, vice president for resort projects at Disney Imagineering, said demand for such accommodations has risen in recent years as families have taken to traveling in larger groups. The trend became particularly pronounced following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he said.
"Ever since 9-11, we just see a lot more family unity," Durham said.
In Orlando, the family-suites market is led by the 777-room Nickelodeon Suites Resort, which has proven immensely popular since it opened in 2005 just to the east of Disney World. The resort pairs family suites with Nickelodeon cartoon characters such as SpongeBob SquarePants.
By adding more than 1,000 new suites to its lineup, Disney hopes to pull more of those travelers onto its property. The conventional hotel rooms to be built as part of the Art of Animation Resort will also allow Disney to restore the room capacity it lost as part of the suites conversion at All-Star Music.
Disney executives said the popularity of those All-Star Music suites convinced them that there is a substantial market for family suites.
"We're feeling very positive about the demand that is interested in both the value product and the family-suite product," said Mark Rucker, vice president for lodging for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "The research for us is showing that the Central Florida marketplace is going to more than capably handle some inventory in this category."
Disney declined to say how much it will spend to build the hotel. It expects to break ground this summer and open it in phases throughout 2012.
Disney said the project will generate approximately 800 construction jobs.

Disney's New Tronorail only at Walt Disney World
Following article courtesy of Orlando Attractions Magazine:
Disney's 3D sci-fi adventure film TRON: Legacy doesn't debut in theaters until December, but guests at Disney World can see a bit of the TRON universe zipping high above their heads.
Renderings of yellow and blue light cycles have transformed one of the trains on the monorail line. A blue light cycle zips to the left along one side of Disney's "highway in the sky" and the yellow light cycle zooms to the right. This particular monorail, or "Tronorail" currently takes guests between Epcot and the Ticket and Transportation Center.
TRON: Legacy is a sequel to 1982's classic TRON, both starring recent Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges. TRON: Legacy will be released in both Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D and is currently scheduled to debut across the US on Dec. 17.

A brand new Holiday Inn recently opened on Disney World property. The 14-story, 323-room hotel, located near Downtown Disney on Hotel Plaza Boulevard, opened in the spot formerly occupied by a Marriott Courtyard.
The Courtyard closed about five years ago after it sustained damage during a bad hurricane season. The hurricanes virtually demolished everything. Just about everything except the basic structure is new. The new hotel has a posh new look sure to please seasoned travelers. Fun design elements provide a warm and inviting feel.
"There is no more exhilarating feeling than opening a family-friendly Holiday Inn resort, on Walt Disney World property and hiring more than 100 employees to welcome our community and guests," said Tony Johnson, regional vice president of operations and general manager of the 323-room hotel.
Disney Advantage:
Because of its location on Disney World property, the hotel is able to offer a host of privileges, such as complimentary transportation to all the Disney World Theme Parks, guaranteed access and preferred tee times at Disney golf courses, advance reservations at Disney World restaurants and free delivery of Disney attraction purchases to the hotel. An on-site Disney retail store will be opening this summer.
Rooms:
Relaxing and contemporary, the guest rooms were designed with a soft color palette and outfitted with a 32-inch HD television, white bedding with pillows that come in two comfort levels: "soft" and "firm," complimentary wired Internet access, a coffeemaker and an electronic safe that accommodates laptops up to 17 inches. Every double room features two queen beds, rather than two double beds. The double queen rooms come with a bath/shower combo. Each king room includes a sleeper oversized chair and a walk-in shower or bath/shower combo. Many of the rooms have balconies - some with a pool view, some overlooking I-4 and some with a view of Downtown Disney.
Dining:
The new modern feel of the hotel extends to the dining as well. Fusion cuisine is a nice change from the old greasy spoons from Holiday Inns of the past. The Palm Breezes Restaurant offers all three meals. Kids 12 and younger eat free at all Holiday Inns when ordering from the kids' menu in the hotel restaurant and accompanied by a dining adult. There's also a "grab and go" location for quick snacks. A pool-side restaurant is also in the works. There are a lot of nice small touches in the hotel, such as purse/bag hooks under the hotel bar.
Amenities:
Along with the Disney World advantages, the hotel features a state-
of-the-art fitness room, a jogging and exercise path, a zero-entry heated swimming and connected lap pool, a hot tub and sun deck and a game room. There's no kids room, but an off-property company can come to the hotel to provide babysitting if needed. The front desk can help make the arrangements. The business center and lobby areas provide free wi-fi. There are also party and meeting rooms for wedding receptions, business meetings and the like.
The average price for a night's stay is around $120, but can go up or down depending on the season. One nice perk is there are no "resort fees" added onto the room price. But they do plan on adding a $10 per day parking fee in the near future. Valet parking is also available.

Disney World 2010 Promotion Offers Volunteers a Free Day
The following article courtesy of Orlando Attractions Magazine
Today Disney announced a new program that celebrates the spirit of volunteer service with a simple proposition: "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day."
Disney World hopes to inspire families to volunteer in their communities during 2010 through this first-of-its-kind program. One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.
While the "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program kicks off Jan. 1, 2010, you can learn more about the program and how to get your free one-day admission to a Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme park by visiting www.DisneyParks.com or www.DisneyParks.ca (Canada).
This year, guests were given one free allowed into Disney World for free on their birthday as part of the "What Will You Celebrate?" campaign.
"In 2010, we want to recognize and add one more reason for celebration: the contributions people make to their communities every day," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We want to inspire one million volunteers - people who will invest time and energy to make their own communities and neighborhoods a better place."
To enable people to sign up for an eligible volunteer project, Disney is working with HandsOn Network, the nation's largest volunteer network. Part of Points of Light Institute, HandsOn Network has 250 on-the-ground volunteer action centers across the country and connects volunteers to more than 70,000 nonprofit agencies that need their help.
Starting Jan. 1, 2010, guests can go visit the Disney Parks Web site to search for volunteer opportunities available in their area through HandsOn Network and sign up for a day of volunteer service. Many of the opportunities will be for projects that entire families can participate in together.
If annual passholders would like to participate, they'll be offered one of three choices instead of the free ticket:
• Special Fastpass cards for certain attractions for up to six people.
• A collectible Ear Hat figurine with exclusive trading pins.
• Donate the free ticket to a non-profit organization designated by Disney.
The free tickets will not be valid at Walt Disney World between March 29 and April 8 or on July 4, 2010.
Ticket quantities are limited. The program begins January 1, 2010 and continues until all tickets are distributed or Dec. 15, 2010, whichever occurs first.

Walt Disney World Set To Increase Ticket Prices Aug. 2nd
Walt Disney World is raising the ticket prices for its theme parks again. Disney last raised its admission prices in August 2008.
The Orlando Sentinel reported Friday that the base price of a one-day, one-park adult ticket will increase from $75 to $79. The same ticket for a child between the ages of 3 and 9 will go from $63 to $68. (Prices do not include sales tax) Prices for the resort's multi-day ticket packages also will rise. The new prices will go into effect Sunday.
The ticket increases come a day after the Walt Disney Co. announced its third-quarter profit dropped 26 percent, as slower DVD sales pushed its movie studio into the red. Does this make any since? If Disney World is loosing profits, then why would they raise their prices again? Especially in these rough and tough economic times?
Well if you are in need of a vacation & wanting to come to Orlando, Florida to visit Disney World, then check out our website for all your Disney World Vacation Packages at www.orlandodiscountticketsusa.com
Don't let the raising price of Disney Tickets stop you from visiting the most magical place on earth. All our Disney Vacation Packages are heavily discounted so that you and your family can enjoy your trip to Disney World without killing your bank account.

Watch The New Disney World Trailer "Alice in Wonderland" By Tim Burton
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is not exactly a tough sell. Besides the director's brand name, we have
Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, an enormous budget along with Walt Disney banner, which all but guarantee this thing is going to be huge.
That said, the first trailer, which debuted on IGN and was promptly ordered down by Walt Disney World, makes an obvious bid to quell concerns that the movie will be a creepfest a la Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There is a heavy emphasis on computer-generated whimsy, some of which looks majestic, and some of which, frankly, needs a little more work.
Oddly, the trailer also seeks to establish the Alice origin story we all know rather than offer specific insight into Burton's vision. There's plenty of time for that (the movie doesn't open until March 5, 2010), so for now, we'll take what we can get. Below is the trailer for Alice in Wonderland...Watch with joy and leave a comment on what you think...
