Manta at SeaWorld Orlando Soft Opening
SeaWorld Orlando hopes that the first of its kind in Florida roller coaster
will lure more visitors than ever to the park.
Beginning Tuesday, park visitors can get a sneak peek and
ride Manta before its official opening scheduled for May 22.
The new ride will
open even as speculation continues the park could be sold soon.
Move over Shamu, SeaWorld Orlando is offering a new attraction
much larger than an orca whale.
It is called Manta, a roller coaster park officials say
will seamlessly take guests from the awe of encountering manta rays in
underwater flight into the sensation of actually being one.
First, guests get to see some of the 3,000 rays the park
has in aquariums. Next, they get to ride the coaster.
Reaching up to 60mph, Manta flies through the sky and
over a lagoon. Riders will travel face-down, horizontally, underneath the belly
of a coaster train shaped as a giant manta with a wing span of 12-feet.
SeaWorld Orlando hopes this new ride will boost attendance at the
park.
It is still not clear what the future holds for SeaWorld.
It is currently owned by Belgian-based beverage company Inbev which could be
trying to sell SeaWorld and the rest of the parks formerly owned by Busch
Entertainment Corporation.

Manta Still on Track for May Opening
SeaWorld
Orlando guests might catch their first glimpses of the new
Manta roller coaster
in action next week when its three trains are tested on the rails already
snaking through the theme park.
By midweek, the safety tests would get
under way after 3 p.m. The trains, which seat 32 passengers apiece and are
fronted by a 12-foot manta design overhead, are tucked away in a maintenance
building on the site. Construction of
Manta, an inverted flying roller coaster
that incorporates an enormous aquarium in its queue at
SeaWorld Orlando, is on track for
its official opening May 22.
"It's like the homestretch for us; we're
about 2½ months away from wrapping it up," said Brian Morrow, director of design
and engineering, during a walk-through of the area Wednesday. The sea life —
including 3,000 animals — will be moved into the aquarium in about three weeks,
Morrow said. "We're putting in landscaping, so that's an indication that we're
very far along in our attraction," he said.
Manta, very visible from the
park entrance, will be a major addition just before a peak tourism season
threatened by difficult economic times. The ride has been planned for years. "We
just keep trucking ahead because we're really looking for this ride to be an
important asset to
SeaWorld Orlando," Morrow said.

SeaWorld Getting Ready for Manta:
Following the announcement in April and set to open in Summer of 2009, there has been speculation around the construction of the newest coaster at SeaWorld Orlando. We were told that the new coaster will as suggested at the time be called Manta. Manta will be Seaworld Orlando's second major coaster, the other being Kraken.
Following on from the mix of animal/ride combinations at the recently opened Aquatica water park, Manta will show riders underwater animal habitats and then soar them skywards on a Manta styled flying coaster. Early artwork suggests that you'll sit under the Manta face down in a hand-gliding position.
Designed to give the ride the feeling of gliding, swooping and diving, Manta will reach a height of 140 feet, top speeds of 60mph moving through four inversions on 3,359 feet of track covering 7 acres of the park. The ride will be constructed by swiss company Bolliger & Mabillard who were also responsible for the construction of Kraken, Hulk Rollercoaster and Duelling Dragons to name a few.
The attraction is to begin when visitors enter a mythical village filled with artisan-created engravings and artwork that celebrate ray legend and lore. In the queue line, visitors will wind through caverns adorned with ray-inspired art in marble, jewels, and mosaics, all hand-created.
If you're not a coaster fan, then you'll still get the opportunity to view the aquarium that forms part of the ride, which will be filled with rays, as well as thousands of fish and other creatures native to oceans all over the world.
